Our RenovATION

Several years ago, the Foundation for Jones Hall, working with Performing Arts Houston and the Houston Symphony, began planning a long-needed renovation of Jones Hall.

A world-class project team was assembled that included Ennead Architects (New York), Threshold Acoustics (Chicago), Apeiro Design (New York), Studio Red Architects (Houston), Bellows Construction (Houston), and Forney Construction (Houston).

The first renovation master plan would have completely rebuilt the interior of the Hall, but then Hurricane Harvey and the pandemic dealt fatal setbacks to the plans. FJH regrouped to create a new, effective, affordable renovation plan to bring the building up to the highest standards in technology and operations, while incorporating modern amenities.

The goals of the renovation are to:

  • Improve the patron experience,
  • Improve acoustics,
  • Improve safety, accessibility, and the flow of people through the building,
  • Enhance access and the experience for our patrons with disabilities,
  • Upgrade technology, and
  • Update backstage operations, safety, and efficiency.

The renovation began in 2021 and is being done largely during the summer months to avoid disrupting the Houston Symphony and Performing Arts Houston’s official seasons. The renovation will be complete by 2025.

The most important features include:

  • Improved patron spaces that include a redesigned and expanded Green Room and lobby, and improved accessibility into and through the building,
  • Improved acoustics with new acoustic panels, sidewall modifications, new sound reflector, and a new orchestra shell,
  • More and better-located restrooms and lounges,
  • All new and reconfigured seating,
  • Improved access, seating, and amenities for patrons with disabilities,
  • Technical and safety upgrades to the fly system, onstage automation, dimming and audio systems, the orchestra pit lift, and backstage sound isolation,
  • And a new off-street loading dock and a second audience entrance on Texas Avenue.

HOW IT’S BEING FUNDEd

The renovation is being funded through a $60 million capital campaign that is receiving wide and generous support from foundations, corporations, and individuals. If you are interested in joining this effort, please visit the Giving page!
